Dangers of the Common

I recently read a book review of The Age of Hitler by Alec Ryrie. The Article was entitled Hitler's Long Shadow. The review talks about how the author points out that fighting fascism isn't enough. He says for too long Western politics has been known for what it fears and wants to avoid. Things such as Socialism, racism, anti-Semitism. Until very recently, this was the general consensus of the Western Powers. The West, along with the rest of the world, struggles to find common loves to rally around and are left with only fears and hate. After two World Wars the west replaced its Christian Heritage with an ant-Nazi, anti-Communism story.
As I read the book summary, I began to think about the commonalities that unite many in churches today. For some it's leading a good life. For others it's about getting the kids involved and fellowship. Churches stand against the taking of the unborn life. Providing for the homeless. All GREAT pursuits and should continue so.
The Apostle John after being exiled to the Isle of Patmos was given a vision on The Lords Day. In the vision he was commanded to write to seven different churches in Asia. The LORD encouraged them to continue in many things they were doing. Their labors for His name's sake, enduring persecution, continued growth in Him, perseverance and faithfulness. He also goes on to rebuke in the areas they need strengthened. He warns them about their idolatry, sexual immorality, and slothfulness. While all these examples are important, the one my mind was drawn to while reading the article was the Church of Ephesus.
Scholars have called it the Loveless Church. It was a very busy church, and our Lord was aware of the areas they were strong in, but it was not done out of their focus and love for Him. They had left their first love and commands that they repent quickly.
Much like the Christian heritage of our nation. Most Americans would agree that we live in the greatest country on Earth. We are recognized to have unalienable rights granted by our Creator that shall not be infringed. Freedoms like life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. We are a giving nation. We give more worldwide to charities than any other people.
As the author of the article so very well points out, America has a Christian story. It will continue if the acts we do now do not overshadow how we got here, trusting in the God of Heaven and Earth.
