The Still Small Voice

Our new Senior Pastor recently shared a message from James chapter 3 on the fires that the tongue can start. Like the rudder of a ship, it can steer us and others in the wrong direction or even totally out of control. Like a fire, it can burn and change us or others for the worse. It can drive a wedge between the created and their Creator, destroy marriages, frustrate children. Even to the point of taking their own life. Our weakness lies in wanting to control the narrative.

The other side is that it can be a rest for the weary, ointment for the bruised and battered, or life and encouragement for those who no longer see their meaning and purpose. In Proverbs 15 we are reminded that a soft answer turns away anger. That a gentle tongue is a tree of life and the lips of the wise disperse knowledge. All of these will change people for the better.

As James said, no man has tamed the tongue. We have to be changed and transformed ourselves first by being silent. By hearing the still small voice that Elijah heard at Mount Horeb. The mountain where God first appeared to Moses and then the nation of Israel. We also must return to the place where it all began. Scripture tells us that faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. Daily we must come full circle. Then, we will be changed into His likeness.
